Toner Tips & Printer Advice

What a Low Toner Warning Really Means

A low toner message does not always mean the next page will come out blank. Many laser printers estimate remaining toner from a page count, not from a scale inside the cartridge. The warning is a reminder, not a precise measurement.

Look at the page, not only the screen

A streak, a fade down one side, or a pale patch that gets worse is a better signal that the cartridge is actually running out. If the page still looks solid, you can often keep printing.

Before you replace it, take the cartridge out and rock it gently from side to side. Toner settles in the hopper, and a careful shake can clear a light page. Do not open the hopper or tap the cartridge on a desk.

Store the spare the right way

Keep a spare cartridge flat, indoors, and in the sealed bag until you need it. A hot car, a damp storeroom, or a shelf next to a heater can clump the powder. Christiansburg summers and winter heating both do that.

When the pages really do fade, bring the empty cartridge in. We match replacements for the brands most New River Valley offices use, and we can recycle the empty one.
